The Genesis – From Surplus to Seed (1919-1963)

Based in Kingston upon Thames, Bert Draper recognized the potential in this surplus. He began trading these items, laying the foundation for what would become B. Draper & Son Limited, the precursor to Draper Tools. This era also witnessed the burgeoning of amateur radio. Advancements in radio technology during the war had led to the development of more sophisticated and accessible equipment. As with surplus tools, surplus military radio gear found its way into the hands of hobbyists, sparking a wave of experimentation and innovation in wireless communication. Early “hams,” as amateur radio operators are known, were resourceful individuals who often modified and repurposed military equipment to suit their needs. This spirit of adaptation and ingenuity mirrors Bert Draper’s approach to his business.

Bert Draper’s business model was shrewd. He operated as a wholesaler, offering both established brands and his own branded products under the B.D.S. (Bert Draper & Son) label. This strategy allowed him to cater to a wider market, offering both recognized quality and more affordable options. This early focus on both established names and in-house products laid the groundwork for Draper’s future success and is a practice continued today.  

During this period, the tools themselves were evolving. The industrial revolution had driven advancements in manufacturing processes, leading to more standardized and efficient production of tools. Expansion and Transformation (1963-1994)

The new site itself had a fascinating history, having previously served as a Royal Navy victualling depot and later as a central store for shadow factories producing Spitfire aircraft during World War II.
