Malaysia’s 2025 Independence Day Special Callsigns – CQ Kebangsaan & CQ Malaysia
Malaysia’s Independence Day and Malaysia Day
Every year, Malaysians celebrate two important national days — Hari Kebangsaan (Independence Day) on 31 August and Hari Malaysia on 16 September.
Hari Kebangsaan marks the historic moment in 1957 when the Federation of Malaya gained independence from British colonial rule. This day is remembered for the Proclamation of Independence at Stadium Merdeka by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the nation’s first Prime Minister, who declared “Merdeka!” seven times before a crowd of thousands.
Hari Malaysia, on the other hand, commemorates the formation of Malaysia in 1963, when Malaya, North Borneo (now Sabah), Sarawak, and Singapore came together to form a new federation. Although Singapore later separated in 1965, Malaysia Day remains a symbol of unity between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia.
Together, these two dates are a celebration of Malaysia’s history, diversity, and shared national identity.
Amateur Radio in Malaysia – A Brief History
Amateur radio in Malaysia has roots going back to the early 20th century, with operators experimenting in wireless communication long before independence. In the post-independence years, amateur radio grew steadily, supported by the formation of the Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters’ Society (MARTS) in 1952 — even before Merdeka.
Over the decades, Malaysian amateur radio operators have played important roles:
- Technical skills development – Many hams have become skilled in electronics, antennas, and propagation.
- Emergency communications – Amateur radio has provided backup communication during disasters and network outages.
- International goodwill – Malaysian callsigns have been heard worldwide, fostering friendships and cultural exchange.
Today, amateur radio remains active in Malaysia, with clubs and communities in every state, continuing the tradition of experimentation, service, and worldwide communication.
Special Callsigns for National Celebrations
One of the ways Malaysia’s amateur radio community marks Hari Kebangsaan and Hari Malaysia is through the use of special event callsigns. This tradition allows operators to represent their state or region while promoting Malaysia on the airwaves.
For 2025, MARTS has issued the commemorative prefix 9M25, symbolizing the year 2025. Each state and federal territory has been assigned a unique suffix, operated by local clubs or associations. Together, they will form a nationwide network of special event stations calling “CQ Kebangsaan” and “CQ Malaysia”.
