If you’ve ever sat behind the mic as net control, you know the drill. You call CQ net, stations start checking in faster than you can write them down, someone asks who checked in third, and meanwhile you’re trying to remember whether W4XYZ already got their traffic or if you just think they did. It’s organized chaos and it’s been done roughly the same way for decades.

That might be about to change.

NetControl.app is a free web application built by Brian (N4AFK) specifically for amateur radio net control operators. It’s still in beta, but it’s already packed with features that make running a net cleaner, more engaging, and honestly, a lot more fun.

What Is NetControl.app?

At its core, NetControl.app is a digital net logging and management tool. You pull it up in your browser before you key up, and it becomes your co-pilot for the entire net session. No more scribbled paper logs. No more “wait, did I already acknowledge that station?” moments.

But it goes well beyond basic logging.

Features That Actually Matter

A Searchable Net Directory

Got a recurring net? You can add it to the NetControl directory so other operators can find it. It’s a small thing, but building a public record of active nets is genuinely useful for the community.

Live Session Logging

When you start a net session, you check stations in digitally — and here’s where it gets interesting. Stations can follow along online in real time. As you log check-ins, participants can watch themselves appear on screen. For ragchew nets and traffic nets alike, that kind of live feedback adds a layer of engagement you just can’t get from a paper log.

Flag Stations with a Tap

This is one of those “why didn’t someone build this sooner” features. During a session, you can mark any station’s log entry with a ?, ★, or ✓ perfect for flagging stations you want to come back to for a question, a game, trivia, or follow-up traffic. No more circling names on a notepad or trying to keep a mental list.

Roster for Regular Check-ins

If you run a net with a loyal core of regulars, you can build a Roster of frequent participants. That means faster check-ins for the stations you see every week. Fewer typos, less hunting through call sign lookups.

Temporary Net Control Delegation

Need to hand off net control mid-session? NetControl.app lets you temporarily delegate net control permissions to another station. Clean handoffs, no confusion about who’s actually running the net.

The Fun Part: Badges and Profiles

Here’s what really sets NetControl.app apart from a simple spreadsheet: gamification.

Every participating station earns attendance badges automatically, tracked through a dynamically generated profile page. Show up consistently? Your profile reflects it. It’s a low-key but genuinely motivating way to reward net loyalty and encourage regular participation especially for newer hams who are still building their on-air confidence.

For net managers trying to boost participation numbers, this alone is worth exploring.

Who Is This For?

NetControl.app is aimed squarely at net control operators — the unsung backbone of organized amateur radio. Whether you’re running a local 2 meter check-in net, a regional traffic net, or a weekly rag chew, the app adapts to your workflow.

It’s also worth noting: this is a passion project, built by a ham for hams. Brian (N4AFK) is actively working on improvements and genuinely welcomes feedback through the app’s footer link or direct email. That kind of responsive, community-driven development is rare, and it means the app is only going to get better.

Getting Started

Head over to netcontrol.app and register for a free account. The app is in beta, so expect a rough edge or two but the core functionality is solid and ready to use.

If you run a net and you’re still managing check-ins with a pen and a sticky note, give it a try.
