If you have spun the VFO dial lately or checked out the latest field activations, you will know that amateur radio in 2026 is a completely different beast compared to just a few years ago. We are moving away from heavy, power-hungry desk rigs and diving straight into ultra-portable setups, cleaner signals, and smart automation.

Whether you are chasing DX from your shack or pitching a wire antenna in the middle of nowhere, here is what is actually driving the hobby forward this year.

1. Goodbye Heavy Rigs, Hello Smart SDRs

Let’s honest here. The days of judging a radio purely by how many watts it can push are sliding away. Today, it is all about receiver dynamics and software integration.

The market has completely embraced Software-Defined Radio (SDR) architecture. Rigs like the IC-705 or lightweight QRP transceivers have proven that you can have a full visual waterfall and top-tier Digital Signal Processing (DSP) inside a radio that fits right into your backpack. Instead of buying new hardware every time a new feature drops, we are now just downloading firmware updates to get better noise reduction and cleaner filtering.

Check it out: Want to know why buying habits are shifting away from traditional rigs this year? Watch this breakdown on YouTube: Don’t Buy a Rig in 2026.

2. Time to Clean Up Our Transmissions (The CSI Push)

With the explosion of digital modes crowding the bands, adjacent-channel interference and nasty transmitter splatter have become a massive headache for everyone. Nobody likes getting buried under phase noise from a station three kilohertz away.

Because of this, the ARRL has heavily pushed the Clean Signal Initiative (CSI) into full gear this year. It is a major technical push forcing us to look closely at our transmitter purity. For everyday operators, this means paying closer attention to proper audio gain staging, avoiding over-driven amplifiers, and keeping our emissions as sharp and clean as possible so everyone can enjoy the bands.

Read the specs: You can check out the full breakdown on transmitter compliance and the latest testing metrics in the ARRL QST April 2026 Issue and https://www.arrl.org/arrl-clean-signal-initiative

3. Smart Field Tech and Automated Messaging

Emergency communications (EmComm) and data routing have gone completely high-tech. The modern field go-kit isn’t just a radio and a heavy battery anymore. It is now a highly integrated system.

Protocols like Winlink are standard for pushing emails and structured logistics forms completely over the air without an internet connection. On top of that, APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) is seeing a huge resurgence. Operators are linking low-power Terminal Node Controllers (TNCs) or software modems to tablets and automated messaging bots, making tactical position tracking and telemetry routing seamless during field deployments.

Get the guide: To see how modern digital emergency kits are being built to survive total grid-down scenarios, read the technical overview on Ares Amateur Radio Guide: Essential Insights for 2026.

4. POTA, SOTA, and the Return of the Key

If you want to find where the action is in 2026, you need to step outside. Outdoor portable operations like Parks on the Air (POTA) and Summits on the Air (SOTA) have taken over the hobby. This trend has completely changed how we look at gear, forcing a massive wave of innovation in lightweight LiFePO4 batteries and quick-deploy resonant wire antennas.

Because keeping weight down is crucial when hiking, running QRP (low power) is the gold standard. And guess what? That has led to a massive, unexpected resurgence in CW (Morse Code) among newer operators. When you are running minimal power into a simple wire antenna, nothing cuts through a high noise floor quite like a straight key or a set of paddles.

More info: Curious about the global movement to get clubs back into the field and engaging the community?

Every year, radio waves from lighthouses around the globe light up the amateur radio bands, connecting people across continents in a unique celebration — the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW). For 2025, Malaysia once again takes its place among the nations proudly activating its historic beacons, bringing together heritage, technology, and the spirit of amateur radio.

The History of ILLW

The International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend began modestly in 1993 as the “Lighthouse Weekend” initiated by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group in Scotland. The early goal was simple yet inspired:
to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships while encouraging amateur radio operators to visit these sites, operate from them, and keep their history alive.

By 1998, the event evolved into its current form under the guidance of Mike Dalrymple, VK4MIK, and has grown into one of the largest annual events in the amateur radio calendar. It’s held on the third full weekend of August each year and now attracts more than 500 lighthouses and lightships in over 40 countries.

The ILLW is not a contest. Instead, it’s a relaxed and friendly on-air gathering, focusing on making contacts, sharing the stories of lighthouses, and highlighting their importance as navigational aids and cultural landmarks. Amateur radio operators often welcome visitors on-site, introduce them to the hobby, and spread awareness of maritime history.

In addition to radio activity, ILLW helps foster lighthouse preservation efforts. Many stations work in cooperation with heritage and conservation groups, ensuring these maritime sentinels are remembered long after their practical use in navigation has faded.

Malaysia’s Role in ILLW

Malaysia has been an active and enthusiastic participant in the ILLW for years. With its rich maritime history and strategic location along important shipping routes, Malaysia’s lighthouses have guided sailors for generations. Today, they also serve as points of connection for amateur radio operators reaching out across the globe.

For ILLW 2025, Malaysia is represented by a remarkable lineup of special event stations, each operating from iconic lighthouse locations. These activations not only promote amateur radio but also showcase Malaysia’s coastal heritage to the world.

Malaysian Lighthouse Activations – ILLW 2025

Region

Callsign

Lighthouse Name & Location

ILLW Reference

Malaysia East

9M4LHD

Tanjung Datu

MY0022

Malaysia West

9M4LBJ

Bukit Jugra

MY0006

Malaysia West

9M4LHB

Altingsburg Lighthouse, Selangor

MY0005

Malaysia West

9M4LHC

Tanjung Gelang

MY0002

Malaysia West

9M4LHN

Tanjung Tuan / Rumah Api

MY0001

Malaysia West

9M4LHJ

Bukit Segenting, Johor

MY0008

Malaysia West

9M4LHT

Bukit Puteri

MY0010

Malaysia West

9M4LHU

Pulau Undan

MY0017

Why This Matters

Malaysia’s presence in ILLW is more than just a weekend of radio contacts — it’s about:

Preserving Maritime Heritage – Sharing the stories of our coastal landmarks.

Promoting Amateur Radio – Encouraging public interest and involvement in this technical, rewarding hobby.

Building Global Friendships – Linking voices from every corner of the world.

By joining this event, Malaysian operators show that the country’s lighthouses are not just historical structures but living symbols of communication and connection.

When to Listen

The 2025 International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend runs from
0001 UTC 16 August 2025 to 2400 UTC 17 August 2025.

Look for Malaysian stations on HF bands and give them a call — you’ll be part of a worldwide celebration of lighthouses, history, and radio.

On 22nd September 2024, I had the privilege of hosting Egon, KF4DX, from Florida, USA, during his visit to Kuala Lumpur. Egon, one of the renowned operators of the PJ2T contest station based on Curaçao Island, brought with him stories of international contests, DXing, and his passion for ham radio.

The highlight of the meet-up was the “eyeball QSO” with fellow Malaysian hams Martin (9M2FRI), Ikmal (9M2EDU), and myself, Piju (9M2PJU). For those unfamiliar with the term, an “eyeball QSO” refers to when radio operators meet face-to-face after having made contact on the air. While our voices have traveled thousands of miles through the ether, this was a special moment to connect in person, share experiences, and discuss our love for the hobby.

Egon’s Journey and PJ2T Station

Egon’s visit to Malaysia was not only about sightseeing; he wanted to connect with the local ham community. As an operator at the PJ2T contest station, he shared his experiences operating from the Caribbean, especially during major contests. PJ2T, located on the beautiful island of Curaçao, is known for its top-tier contest performance, and Egon gave us insights into the setup, challenges, and thrill of contesting from such a prestigious station.

He shared stories of the camaraderie among the team members, the technical aspects of maintaining a high-performance station, and the strategies they use to remain competitive in international contests. Hearing about his adventures, operating in different time zones and propagation conditions, was truly inspiring.

Sharing Local Ham Culture

In return, we shared our experiences operating from Malaysia, discussing the challenges and joys of operating from Southeast Asia. Propagation differences, local ham culture, and our passion for promoting amateur radio were topics of interest. Martin (9M2FRI) and Ikmal (9M2EDU) contributed their experiences, making the gathering a lively exchange of ideas.

Our conversation also touched on the technical aspects of setting up stations, antennas, and the ever-evolving nature of technology in ham radio. Egon was particularly interested in learning how we deal with local interference issues and what bands and modes are most popular in Malaysia.

A Day to Remember

The eyeball QSO was more than just a meet-and-greet; it was a celebration of the international ham spirit. Amateur radio is about connecting people across borders, sharing knowledge, and building friendships, and that’s exactly what this gathering accomplished.

As we concluded the event, we took some group photos to capture the moment. These pictures, which I will share in the post, are a reminder of the bonds we forge over the airwaves and in person.

Looking Ahead
