In the world of amateur radio, creativity and field innovation often make the biggest difference. A great example comes from Malaysian operator 9W2RYF, who has built an ingenious vehicle-mounted portable antenna system — ideal for quick HF (High Frequency) operations in the field without permanent vehicle modifications.

Smart and Simple Design

The setup uses a wheel stand base, a clever yet simple design that allows the antenna mast to be stabilized by the vehicle’s own weight. The base plate slides under the car tire, and as the vehicle is parked on it, it firmly anchors the mast in place.
The mounting structure is fabricated from steel tubing, painted in metallic silver to resist rust. Adjustable bolts and wing nuts allow for quick setup, dismantling, and height adjustment. The vertical pole securely holds a telescopic mast, which in this example supports a lightweight HF antenna, possibly a Moxon or dipole type for portable operations.

Portable Yet Sturdy

The second image shows the complete setup in action — the antenna raised beside a compact MPV, providing excellent portability for field days or emergency communication exercises.
Despite being mounted next to a car, the structure stands firm and stable even under moderate wind, thanks to the weight of the vehicle pressing down on the base plate. It’s a perfect compromise between mobility and reliability.

Why This Setup Works

No permanent modification — no drilling or bolting to the vehicle.

Fast deployment — mount, raise the mast, and you’re ready to transmit.

Compact storage — the base plate and pole sections fit easily in the car.

Safe grounding and isolation — with proper connection, the vehicle body can serve as a ground plane for improved performance on HF bands.

Conclusion

9W2RYF’s approach showcases the spirit of amateur radio ingenuity: practical, efficient, and field-ready. Whether for casual portable operation, contesting, or emergency communication, this stationary mobile antenna mounting method offers a reliable and professional-looking solution.

If you’re planning to operate portable from your car, consider this design — it’s proof that sometimes, the simplest ideas deliver the best results.

Credit to 9W2RYF Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/ujang.romeoyankiefox/posts/pfbid0TRktrG8jRAvEEDTB5r9ux6sDkcRu39SkNBMGDm5Hu2pPG59sgCTK84UKLFL26eHVl

Every year, radio waves from lighthouses around the globe light up the amateur radio bands, connecting people across continents in a unique celebration — the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW). For 2025, Malaysia once again takes its place among the nations proudly activating its historic beacons, bringing together heritage, technology, and the spirit of amateur radio.

The History of ILLW

The International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend began modestly in 1993 as the “Lighthouse Weekend” initiated by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group in Scotland. The early goal was simple yet inspired:
to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships while encouraging amateur radio operators to visit these sites, operate from them, and keep their history alive.

By 1998, the event evolved into its current form under the guidance of Mike Dalrymple, VK4MIK, and has grown into one of the largest annual events in the amateur radio calendar. It’s held on the third full weekend of August each year and now attracts more than 500 lighthouses and lightships in over 40 countries.

The ILLW is not a contest. Instead, it’s a relaxed and friendly on-air gathering, focusing on making contacts, sharing the stories of lighthouses, and highlighting their importance as navigational aids and cultural landmarks. Amateur radio operators often welcome visitors on-site, introduce them to the hobby, and spread awareness of maritime history.

In addition to radio activity, ILLW helps foster lighthouse preservation efforts. Many stations work in cooperation with heritage and conservation groups, ensuring these maritime sentinels are remembered long after their practical use in navigation has faded.

Malaysia’s Role in ILLW

Malaysia has been an active and enthusiastic participant in the ILLW for years. With its rich maritime history and strategic location along important shipping routes, Malaysia’s lighthouses have guided sailors for generations. Today, they also serve as points of connection for amateur radio operators reaching out across the globe.

For ILLW 2025, Malaysia is represented by a remarkable lineup of special event stations, each operating from iconic lighthouse locations. These activations not only promote amateur radio but also showcase Malaysia’s coastal heritage to the world.

Malaysian Lighthouse Activations – ILLW 2025

Region

Callsign

Lighthouse Name & Location

ILLW Reference

Malaysia East

9M4LHD

Tanjung Datu

MY0022

Malaysia West

9M4LBJ

Bukit Jugra

MY0006

Malaysia West

9M4LHB

Altingsburg Lighthouse, Selangor

MY0005

Malaysia West

9M4LHC

Tanjung Gelang

MY0002

Malaysia West

9M4LHN

Tanjung Tuan / Rumah Api

MY0001

Malaysia West

9M4LHJ

Bukit Segenting, Johor

MY0008

Malaysia West

9M4LHT

Bukit Puteri

MY0010

Malaysia West

9M4LHU

Pulau Undan

MY0017

Why This Matters

Malaysia’s presence in ILLW is more than just a weekend of radio contacts — it’s about:

Preserving Maritime Heritage – Sharing the stories of our coastal landmarks.

Promoting Amateur Radio – Encouraging public interest and involvement in this technical, rewarding hobby.

Building Global Friendships – Linking voices from every corner of the world.

By joining this event, Malaysian operators show that the country’s lighthouses are not just historical structures but living symbols of communication and connection.

When to Listen

The 2025 International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend runs from
0001 UTC 16 August 2025 to 2400 UTC 17 August 2025.

Look for Malaysian stations on HF bands and give them a call — you’ll be part of a worldwide celebration of lighthouses, history, and radio.

Malaysia’s Independence Day and Malaysia Day

Every year, Malaysians celebrate two important national days — Hari Kebangsaan (Independence Day) on 31 August and Hari Malaysia on 16 September.

Hari Kebangsaan marks the historic moment in 1957 when the Federation of Malaya gained independence from British colonial rule. This day is remembered for the Proclamation of Independence at Stadium Merdeka by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the nation’s first Prime Minister, who declared “Merdeka!” seven times before a crowd of thousands.

Hari Malaysia, on the other hand, commemorates the formation of Malaysia in 1963, when Malaya, North Borneo (now Sabah), Sarawak, and Singapore came together to form a new federation. Although Singapore later separated in 1965, Malaysia Day remains a symbol of unity between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia.

Together, these two dates are a celebration of Malaysia’s history, diversity, and shared national identity.

Amateur Radio in Malaysia – A Brief History

Amateur radio in Malaysia has roots going back to the early 20th century, with operators experimenting in wireless communication long before independence. In the post-independence years, amateur radio grew steadily, supported by the formation of the Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters’ Society (MARTS) in 1952 — even before Merdeka.

Over the decades, Malaysian amateur radio operators have played important roles:

Technical skills development – Many hams have become skilled in electronics, antennas, and propagation.

Emergency communications – Amateur radio has provided backup communication during disasters and network outages.

International goodwill – Malaysian callsigns have been heard worldwide, fostering friendships and cultural exchange.

Today, amateur radio remains active in Malaysia, with clubs and communities in every state, continuing the tradition of experimentation, service, and worldwide communication.

Special Callsigns for National Celebrations

One of the ways Malaysia’s amateur radio community marks Hari Kebangsaan and Hari Malaysia is through the use of special event callsigns. This tradition allows operators to represent their state or region while promoting Malaysia on the airwaves.

For 2025, MARTS has issued the commemorative prefix 9M25, symbolizing the year 2025. Each state and federal territory has been assigned a unique suffix, operated by local clubs or associations. Together, they will form a nationwide network of special event stations calling “CQ Kebangsaan” and “CQ Malaysia”.

Official 2025 Special Event Callsigns

9M25MA – Perak – Dsawit DXers Team

9M25MB – Selangor – KRASB

9M25MD – Kelantan – KELATEDX

9M25MJ – Johor – Kulai DX

9M25MW – Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya – KLDX

Purpose and Significance

The special callsign event is more than just a hobby activity — it’s an opportunity to:

Showcase Malaysia to the international amateur radio community.

Encourage participation and cooperation among Malaysian operators.

Strengthen ties between clubs across different states.

Preserve and promote the heritage of amateur radio in Malaysia.

Each QSO made during this period serves as a reminder of Malaysia’s unity, history, and the continued relevance of amateur radio in connecting people across distances.

How to Join the Celebration

Listen out for the 9M25 callsigns.

Make contact and exchange greetings for Hari Kebangsaan and Hari Malaysia.

Log your contacts — some operators may offer commemorative QSL cards or e-certificates.

Spread the word on social media and within your radio community.

Amateur radio, often referred to as ham radio, has been around for over a century. Yet, in 2025, it’s still surrounded by confusion, outdated assumptions, and flat-out myths. Some believe it’s only for retirees, others assume it’s obsolete thanks to smartphones and the internet. But ham radio isn’t just alive—it’s thriving.

In Malaysia and around the world, people from all walks of life are picking up microphones, tapping keyboards, and building antennas to connect through the airwaves. If you’re skeptical about amateur radio, this article is for you. Let’s bust the most common myths and explore what ham radio truly offers in the modern world.

Myth #1: “Ham Radio is Obsolete—We Have the Internet Now!”

Fact: Ham radio is not obsolete—it’s more relevant than ever.

While the internet is convenient, it depends on infrastructure: cell towers, fiber optics, data centers, electricity, and satellites. When any of these fail—due to natural disasters, cyberattacks, or political instability—communication can go dark instantly.

Ham radio doesn’t rely on any of that. Operators can communicate locally, nationally, or globally with or without the internet. HF bands allow global contacts using nothing but the ionosphere. VHF and UHF enable city-wide comms. And digital tools like Winlink allow users to send emails over radio.

This makes ham radio indispensable for:

Emergency communications (EMCOMM)

Search and rescue

Natural disasters (like floods, typhoons, and earthquakes)

Remote expeditions and off-grid living

When the grid fails, amateur radio still works.

Myth #2: “You Need to Know Morse Code to Get a License”

Fact: Morse code is no longer required for any license class in Malaysia.

For decades, Morse code—or CW—was a core part of ham radio licensing. In Malaysia, this was especially true for Class A licenses, which grant access to high transmission power and more high-frequency (HF) bands. But times have changed.

As of recent MCMC updates, CW testing has been removed from the requirements for Class A. That means you can now enjoy full privileges—including worldwide DX on HF—without learning Morse code.

Still, many hams enjoy CW as a mode. It’s efficient, low-power, and fun. But now it’s optional, not mandatory.

Myth #3: “Ham Radio is Only for Old People”

Fact: Ham radio is a hobby for all ages, and young people are joining in increasing numbers.

While it’s true that many veteran hams have decades of experience, the face of amateur radio is getting younger. Across Malaysia and beyond, students, university tech enthusiasts, hikers, and gamers are joining the airwaves.

Here’s why young people are tuning in:

STEM learning: Radio theory, electronics, propagation.

DIY electronics: Raspberry Pi, Arduino, ESP32, SDR (Software-Defined Radio).

Adventure radio: Parks on the Air (POTA), Summits on the Air (SOTA).

Digital communications: APRS, FT8, DMR, AllStarLink, and more.

Groups like Youth on the Air are helping to build the next generation of operators.

Myth #4: “Ham Radio is Just Talking on a Microphone”

Fact: That’s only a tiny part of what amateur radio offers.

Ham radio today is incredibly diverse. Yes, you can talk on voice using FM, AM, or SSB—but the hobby has expanded far beyond that. Here’s what modern hams are doing:

Digital Modes: Like FT8, JS8Call, SSTV (sending images), VARA, and D-STAR.

Satellites: Communicate through low-earth orbit amateur satellites and even bounce signals off the International Space Station (ISS).

EME (Earth-Moon-Earth): Bounce signals off the Moon to reach the other side of the world.

DIY projects: Build your own antennas, radios, and even repeaters.

Portable ops: Run radios from mountains, beaches, or jungle trails.

Packet radio & keyboard-to-keyboard chat over long distances.

Amateur radio is a hands-on playground for experimentation, learning, and innovation.

Myth #5: “Getting Licensed is Difficult and Expensive”

Fact: It’s easier and more affordable than most hobbies.

In Malaysia, the MCMC offers three amateur radio license classes:

Class

Frequency Access

Callsign Prefix

Exam Requirement

Morse Required?

Class C

VHF/UHF

9W3

RAE C

No

Class B

HF/VHF/UHF

9W2/9W6/9W8

RAE B

No

Class A

HF/VHF/UHF

9M2/9M6/9M8/9M4

RAE A

No

The RAE (Radio Amateur Exam) is a multiple-choice technical test.

Study materials are available for free online (SEMS, YouTube, Facebook groups).

Many pass on the first try with just a few weeks of study.

License fees are reasonable.

A basic VHF handheld transceiver costs as little as RM100, and you can upgrade gear as you grow.

Myth #6: “You Need a Big House or Tower”

Fact: You can operate ham radio from condos, apartments, cars, or even a backpack.

Sure, big towers and large antennas help, but they’re not required. Many Malaysian hams live in urban flats or tight spaces.

Ways to get on the air with limited space:

Magnet-mount antennas on a metal balcony.

End-fed wires thrown over trees.

Portable HF setups for POTA/SOTA.

Internet linked repeater networks for wide-area comms with a handheld.

You don’t need a mansion. Just creativity and curiosity.

Myth #7: “Ham Radio Can’t Do GPS or Real-Time Data”

Fact: Welcome to APRS—the real-time digital backbone of ham radio.

APRS stands for Automatic Packet Reporting System. It allows hams to:

Send GPS coordinates from moving vehicles, balloons, or hikers.

Transmit weather data, battery voltage, or sensor readings.

Text message between stations.

APRS works over frequencies using packet radio. It integrates with:

Digipeaters (which forward packets across the network)

I-Gates (which send packets to the internet for global viewing)

Mobile apps and open-source software

This system is popular for:

Tracking during marathons or search-and-rescue.

Mapping activators for SOTA/POTA.

Emergency location reporting during floods or landslides.

APRS proves that ham radio is fully capable of real-time, tactical, and off-grid tracking.

Myth #8: “Ham Radio is Dying”

Fact: Ham radio is growing.

Reasons for the rise:

Resilient communication in unstable times.

Increased interest in self-reliance and off-grid living.

Integration with modern tech: SDR, LoRa, digital modes, Raspberry Pi.

Youth engagement through schools, clubs, and scouting.

Final Thoughts

Ham radio is not a relic. It’s a resilient, evolving, and surprisingly modern hobby that connects people in ways the internet never can. From voice to digital modes, from APRS tracking to satellite contact, it offers something for everyone.

Whether you’re interested in electronics, communication, emergency preparedness, or just talking to someone across the world without needing a SIM card—ham radio welcomes you.

Amateur radio operations in Malaysia follow international standards and frequencies, making it possible for operators worldwide to communicate seamlessly. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), also known as SKMM, serves as the regulatory authority overseeing all amateur radio activities in the country.

Who Can Apply for a Malaysian Amateur Radio License?

There are two main categories of applicants:

Malaysian Citizens and Residents: Individuals who wish to establish and operate their own amateur radio station in Malaysia must obtain Amateur Station Apparatus Assignment (ASAA).

Foreign Amateur Radio Operators: Licensed amateur radio operators from countries that maintain reciprocal agreements with Malaysia may apply for temporary operating privileges during their stay.

Before You Begin: Review The Guidelines

Before starting your application process, it’s essential to review the official guidelines. MCMC provides comprehensive guidelines that outline all requirements, procedures, and regulations for amateur radio operations in Malaysia. These guidelines contain crucial information that will help you understand the complete licensing process and ensure your application meets all requirements.

Guidelines For Amateur Radio Service In Malaysia:

https://sems.mcmc.gov.my/sems/contents/show/inline/1/content/

https://sems.mcmc.gov.my/sems/contents/show/inline/3/content/en

Application Process for Malaysian Residents

The application process involves completing the official forms and paying the required fees through MCMC’s online payment system. The main application form covers station callsign assignment and apparatus licensing requirements.

Study, Register, Sit and Pass The Radio Amateur Examination:

https://sems.mcmc.gov.my/sems/contents/index

https://sems.mcmc.gov.my/sems/

Application Form: https://www.mcmc.gov.my/skmmgovmy/media/General/pdf/Form-AMATEUR-SERVICE_v2018_ISO.pdf

Callsign Database: https://www.mcmc.gov.my/en/legal/registers/register-of-apparatus-assignments-search

Amateur Radio Handbook: https://sems.mcmc.gov.my/sems/contents/show/inline/2/content/en

Processing times can vary, so it’s recommended to submit your application well in advance of when you plan to begin operations.

Foreign Amateur Radio Operators: Temporary Operating Permits

Foreign amateurs visiting Malaysia can obtain temporary operating privileges through a streamlined process managed by the Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters Society (MARTS). This organization serves as the liaison between foreign operators and MCMC.

Required Documentation

Foreign applicants must prepare the following documents:

Completed Application Form – Download the official form and fill it out completely

Amateur Radio License Copy – A clear photocopy of your current amateur radio operator certificate from your home country

Passport Information – Photocopy of your passport’s photograph page

Visa Documentation – If applicable, include a copy of your Malaysian visa

Work Permit – Copy of your Malaysian work permit (if you’re working in Malaysia)

Society Endorsement – A support letter from your home country’s amateur radio society, which must be a member of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU)

Application Timeline and Submission

Foreign operators should plan ahead, as the application process requires time for review and approval. Submit all required documents at least two months before your intended operating dates.

Submit Applications To: secretary@marts.org.my

MARTS will provide information once they receive your complete application package. They handle the coordination with MCMC and will guide you through any additional requirements.

Understanding Malaysian Amateur Radio Regulations

Malaysia’s amateur radio service operates under comprehensive telecommunications legislation. The primary governing documents include the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and various technical standards regulations.

Tips for a Successful Application

Documentation Quality: Ensure all photocopies are clear and legible. Poor quality documents can delay processing.

Complete Information: Double-check that all forms are completely filled out. Missing information is a common cause of application delays.

Professional Presentation: While amateur radio is a hobby, approach the application process professionally. Regulatory authorities appreciate well-organized, complete submissions.

Follow Up Appropriately: After submitting your application, allow adequate processing time before following up. Each application requires review and verification.

International Reciprocal Agreements

Malaysia maintains reciprocal operating agreements with numerous countries, allowing their licensed amateurs to operate in Malaysia under temporary permits. These agreements facilitate international amateur radio activity and emergency communications cooperation.

Final Considerations

Amateur radio licensing involves both privileges and responsibilities. Licensed operators must comply with all applicable regulations, maintain proper station records, and operate within their license class privileges.

Whether you’re a Malaysian resident seeking your first amateur radio license or a foreign amateur planning to operate during a visit, thorough preparation and attention to regulatory requirements will ensure a smooth application process.

Remember that amateur radio serves not only as a technical hobby but also as a vital emergency communication resource. Your participation contributes to a worldwide network of skilled operators ready to provide communication support when traditional systems fail.
