When people hear the words amateur radio, many still picture hobbyists talking over the airwaves, chasing distant contacts, or collecting QSL cards.

But deep within the rugged mountains and dense forests of Peninsular Malaysia, amateur radio recently demonstrated its real value in an actual emergency situation.

As search and rescue teams worked tirelessly to locate missing hiker Jaslinda Saludin, technology from the amateur radio community became part of the operation. Members of the Cameron Highlands Amateur Radio Club supported the effort by providing LoRa APRS tracking devices to search personnel operating in difficult terrain.

It was a clear reminder that amateur radio is not only a hobby, but also a practical tool that can improve coordination and potentially save lives.

A Challenging Search

The search for Jaslinda attracted national attention as hundreds of rescuers combed through difficult mountain trails and dense rainforest along the Trans Spencer Chapman route.

Operating in such an environment presents many challenges. Cellular coverage is often unreliable, visibility can be limited, and search teams may be spread across wide areas separated by ridges and valleys.

In situations like these, knowing the exact location of every search team becomes just as important as finding the missing person.

Enter LoRa APRS

To improve situational awareness during the operation, LoRa APRS trackers were deployed among search teams.

APRS, or Automatic Packet Reporting System, has been used by amateur radio operators for many years to transmit location data, messages, and telemetry. When combined with LoRa technology, these trackers can provide long range GPS position reporting while using very low power.

Each tracker sends out periodic location updates, allowing coordinators to monitor team movements in near real time.

Instead of relying only on voice reports, commanders can see where teams have been, identify gaps in the search area, and coordinate resources more effectively.

Why Tracking Matters

In a large scale search and rescue operation, dozens of personnel may be moving through different sectors at the same time.

Without tracking, it can be difficult to determine:

Which areas have already been searched

Whether teams are staying within their assigned routes

Where additional resources are needed

If a team is in distress and requires assistance

LoRa APRS helps answer these questions by creating a live digital picture of the operation as it unfolds.

This improves not only efficiency but also the safety of the rescuers themselves.

Amateur Radio’s Continuing Relevance

The use of LoRa APRS during the search for Jaslinda highlights how amateur radio continues to evolve with modern technology.

Today’s amateur radio operators are actively exploring digital communications, GPS tracking, mesh networking, telemetry systems, and internet connected radio networks. These tools complement traditional voice communication and expand what volunteer operators can contribute during emergencies.

While smartphones, satellites, and internet services dominate everyday communication, remote wilderness environments still present serious challenges. In these situations, independent radio systems often remain one of the most reliable options.

Service to the Community

Perhaps the most important part of this story is the willingness of volunteers to contribute their skills and equipment during a critical mission.

The amateur radio community has always been built on a strong sense of public service. Whether assisting during natural disasters, supporting community events, or helping coordinate search and rescue operations, radio amateurs continue to show that technical knowledge can become a powerful asset when it is needed most.

The search for Jaslinda is a reminder that behind every callsign is a person ready to help.

And sometimes, a small tracker sending its position from deep inside the forest can make a real difference in bringing someone home safely.

Introduction

In an era of FT8, satellites, and 5G, the oldest digital mode still accounts for ∼30% of all HF contacts logged worldwide. Morse code, or CW, is not nostalgia. It is physics, efficiency, and resilience. Here is why amateur radio operators from contesters in Germany to SOTA activators in New Zealand still learn and use CW in 2026, with hard data and official sources.

1. Physics: CW Wins When Signals Are Weak

Bandwidth determines signal-to-noise ratio. A typical SSB signal occupies 2.7 kHz. CW uses ∼100-150 Hz for 20 WPM.

The math: For the same transmitter power, narrowing bandwidth by 10x gives a 10 dB SNR improvement. SSB to CW is a 27x reduction = +14.3 dB advantage.

Real impact: 14 dB is the difference between “I can’t hear you” and “Solid copy”. This is why DXpeditions to rare entities like Bouvet 3Y0J in 2023 logged 60% of their QSOs on CW despite pileups on SSB and FT8.

QRP evidence: The QRPARCI “Five-Watt Award” requires 1000 miles per watt. 90% of qualifying contacts are CW. WSPR proved a 200 µW CW signal can span the Atlantic. SSB cannot.

2. International Regulatory & Emergency Status

ITU still protects CW. ITU Radio Regulations Appendix 1, §3 defines A1A emission as Morse telegraphy. It retains global primary allocation on all amateur HF bands. No other 19th-century mode has this status.

Not required for licensing, but required for function. The FCC dropped 5 WPM Morse testing in 2007. Malaysia’s MCMC followed in 2013. Yet ARRL’s 2024 survey shows 42% of new US Technicians upgrade specifically to use CW on HF.

Disaster comms: IARU Emergency Telecommunications Guide 2023 still lists CW as “the mode of last resort” because it works with damaged equipment and operators under stress. During the 2024 Taiwan earthquake, amateur volunteers passed health-and-welfare traffic on 7.060 MHz CW when local cell networks failed.

3. Spectrum Efficiency & Contest Reality

More QSOs per kHz. The 40m band is 300 kHz wide. You can fit 111 SSB signals at 2.7 kHz spacing. You can fit 2000 CW signals at 150 Hz spacing.

Contest data: CQ WW CW 2025 claimed scores averaged 2.1x higher QSO rates than CQ WW SSB. Reason: No “please repeat your callsign” in noise.
599 TU
takes 2 seconds.

DXCC impact: ARRL DXCC Most Wanted Survey 2025: 7 of the top 10 most needed entities logged >70% of their total QSOs on CW. If you want to work them, you learn CW.

4. Simplicity = Survivability

CW transmitters are trivial. A 1-transistor “Pixie” kit costs $3 and puts out 300 mW. No PC, no sound card, no software updates.

Military & professional retention: US Army Signal Corps MOS 25S still trains Morse at 16 WPM. French Navy confirmed in 2022 that all surface ships retain Morse capability for NATO interoperability. Reason: EMP and cyber resilience.

Amateur radio’s mandate: ITU-R M.1544 states one purpose of amateur service is “self-training… and technical investigations”. Building and operating a CW station teaches fundamental RF skills that FT8 hides.

5. Human Factor: A Global Language with No Accent

Error rate: In CCIR studies, CW copy at 12 WPM by trained operators shows 0.3% character error in 0 dB SNR. SSB at 0 dB SNR is ∼25% word error. The human brain is a superior DSP for patterned tones.

Cognitive benefit: NIH study 2021: Learning Morse at >15 WPM increases functional connectivity in auditory-motor regions comparable to musicians. Many operators call it “active meditation”.

Community: CWops Club, FISTS, SKCC have 30,000+ active members. CW Academy runs free classes each semester with 1,200 graduates/year. Growth, not decline.

6. CW vs Modern Data Modes: It’s Not Either/Or

Metric

CW 20 WPM

SSB

FT8

Bandwidth

150 Hz

2700 Hz

50 Hz

SNR limit

-1 dB

+10 dB

-21 dB

Info rate

40 WPM text

150 WPM voice

5 WPM callsign+grid

Needs PC?

No

No

Yes

Ragchew possible?

Yes

Yes

No

Source: ARRL Handbook 2025, Chapter 14

FT8 beats CW for propagation reporting. CW beats FT8 for real conversations and contesting. SSB beats both for local nets. Hams use all three.

How to Start Learning in 2026

Method: Koch method, 20 WPM character speed, 5 WPM effective. Apps: Morse Mania, IZ2UUF. 15 min/day.

Practice: CWops CW Academy Level 1 – free, runs Jan/May/Sep.

First QSO: 7.025-7.040 MHz, call “QRS PSE” at 10 WPM. SKCC Sked Page will find you a slow patient op.

Gear: QCX-mini kit $55, or use any SSB radio on CW mode. Paddle: Baofeng key RM30.

Conclusion

Amateur radio keeps CW because the laws of physics have not been repealed. 14 dB of free gain, 180 years of global interoperability, and a failure mode of “two wires and a key” still matter when the goal is “when all else fails”.

Morse is not about the past. It is about having one mode that works when you need it most, from a SOTA summit with 1W to an emergency net with no infrastructure.

That is why 42% of new hams still learn it, why DXpeditions still rely on it, and why ITU still protects it.

For amateur radio operators, the callsign is more than just an ID—it’s a gateway to a community built on technical skill and shared passion. Whether you are tracking a DX contact or simply trying to verify a local station in the Klang Valley, having accurate, accessible data is essential.

That is why MY-Callbook was created: a dedicated Malaysian Amateur Radio Directory designed to bring the local community closer together through a streamlined, digital platform.

What is MY-Callbook?

Developed as a centralized hub for Malaysian hams, MY-Callbook serves as a modern directory for operators across all license classes. From seasoned Class A veterans to the newest Class C operators, the platform provides a clear overview of our growing community.

Currently, the directory is rapidly expanding, already hosting profiles for:

Class A (Advanced)

Class B (Standard)

Class C (Entry Level)

Have you ever wanted to talk to astronauts on the ISS, communicate without the internet during a flood, or chat with friends across the globe using nothing but a wire antenna?

Welcome to the world of Amateur Radio (Ham Radio).

In Malaysia, this is a thriving community of over 14,000 operators who are part hobbyists, part technical wizards, and part emergency responders. If you’ve seen the “Roadmap to Amateur Radio in Malaysia” infographic and felt a spark of curiosity, you are in the right place.

Here is your step-by-step breakdown of how to go from a total beginner to a licensed 9M (or 9W) operator.

Phase 1: Getting Started (The “Listening” Phase)

Before you touch a transmitter, you need to understand the culture. You don’t need a license to listen, only to talk.

Join the Community: The infographic highlights MARTS (Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters’ Society). They are the national body for ham radio. Joining a club is the fastest way to get mentorship (“Elmers” in ham speak) and technical advice.

Action: Visit marts.org.my to find local chapters.

What is “SWL”? Short Wave Listening. You can buy a cheap “SDR dongle” online or just use a WebSDR to listen to amateur conversations. This helps you learn the lingo before you ever press the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button.

Phase 2: Passing the RAE (The Exam)

To transmit, you must prove you know what you’re doing. This happens via the Radio Amateur Examination (RAE).

Unlike the old days, you don’t need to learn Morse Code to get started! The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has streamlined the license into three classes:

The 3 License Classes

Class

Prefix

Min. Age

The “Need to Know”

Class C

9W3

12

Entry Level. 35 Questions. You get VHF/UHF privileges (local comms) with lower power (25W). Perfect for handheld walkie-talkies.

Class B

9W2

14

Standard. 50 Questions. Unlocks HF bands (long-distance) and higher power (50W).

Class A

9M

15

Expert. 50 Questions. Maximum privileges (up to 1000W output). Reserved for experienced operators.

Pro Tip: Most beginners aim for Class B directly if they are over 14, as it gives you access to HF frequencies where you can talk internationally.

How to Apply

You don’t go to a physical counter anymore.

Buy an exam voucher (RM 50.00).

Register online via the MCMC SEMS (SKMM Examination Management System) portal.

Phase 3: Get Certified & Licensed (The Paperwork)

Passing the exam is only half the battle. You need two specific documents to be legal. Think of it like buying a car: you need a driving license (AROC) and road tax (AA).

1. The Operator’s Certificate (AROC)

What it is: Proof that you passed the exam.

Validity: It’s yours for life (mostly), but it doesn’t let you build a station yet.

2. The Apparatus Assignment (AA)

What it is: This is your station license. It permits you to buy and own a radio.

The Cost:

Class C: RM 60 (Application) + RM 12 (Annual Fee)

Class B: RM 60 (Application) + RM 24 (Annual Fee)

Class A: RM 60 (Application) + RM 36 (Annual Fee)

Important: You must hold a Class B license for at least one year before you are eligible to upgrade to the coveted Class A.

Phase 4: Get On The Air!

Once you have your AA, MCMC will issue your unique Call Sign.

Example:
9W2ABC
(This tells the world you are a Class B operator from Malaysia).

What Can You Do?

DXing: Hunting for distant stations (e.g., contacting a station in Brazil from your home in KL).

Satellite Comms: Using a simple handheld radio to bounce signals off passing satellites.

Emergency Comms: When phone towers go down during floods, hams are often the only line of communication.

The Big “No-Nos”

Amateur radio is strictly non-commercial.

No business discussions.

No politics or religious broadcasting.

No broadcasting music or entertainment.

Ready to Start?

The journey to becoming a “9M” or “9W” starts with a single step.

Visit the MARTS website to find a study guide.

Download the “Amateur Radio Handbook” from the MCMC website.

Find a local club to see a radio in action.

See you on the airwaves!

As the RF spectrum grows increasingly congested, amateur radio operators and regulators need smarter tools to monitor, detect, and respond to suspicious activity. Spectrum Alert is an open-source software suite designed to meet that challenge head-on. It brings machine learning, RF fingerprinting, and multi-device triangulation to the fingertips of ham operators and spectrum regulators alike.

What is Spectrum Alert?

Spectrum Alert is a Python-based toolkit that leverages RTL-SDR receivers and advanced analytics to monitor ham bands, detect illegal transmissions, and even triangulate the source of RF anomalies. Whether you’re a radio enthusiast, an emergency communications volunteer, or part of a regulatory body, this tool can transform your spectrum surveillance operations.

Key Features

Real-Time Spectrum Monitoring: Continuously scans pre-configured ham bands and detects abnormal signal behavior.

RF Fingerprinting: Trains models to uniquely identify and differentiate between transmitters based on their signal features.

AI-Powered Anomaly Detection: Uses the Isolation Forest algorithm to catch unauthorized or suspicious transmissions.

Model Training & Automation: Automatically gathers IQ data, trains ML models, and monitors the spectrum—hands-free.

MQTT Integration: Publishes real-time alerts, signal strength, and anomalies for centralized or cloud-based monitoring.

Direction Finding (DF): Deploy multiple Raspberry Pis or SDR devices in different locations to triangulate the origin of signals.

Lightweight Versions: Optimized builds for low-resource environments like Raspberry Pi or headless servers.

How It Works

You can run Spectrum Alert via a simple menu-based interface, with options to:

Gather RF data

Train AI models

Start real-time spectrum monitoring

Run a complete end-to-end process with a single command

If you already have IQ datasets or trained models, Spectrum Alert intelligently skips steps, saving you time.

Real-World Use Cases

Scenario 1: Neighborhood Spectrum Watch

Want to ensure no pirate stations are interfering with your net? Deploy a Raspberry Pi and RTL-SDR dongle at your shack, gather data, and begin scanning. Anomalies are logged and sent to an MQTT dashboard for real-time review.

Scenario 2: Fingerprint Rogue Devices

Track the same illegal transmitter appearing on different bands or days. RF fingerprinting lets you identify and flag persistent offenders.

Scenario 3: Multi-Device Triangulation

Set up multiple Spectrum Alert instances across your city. When each node detects an anomaly, MQTT aggregates the data—letting you estimate the source via cross-correlation. This transforms Spectrum Alert into a lightweight direction-finding system.

Heatmaps and Insight

The software supports geospatial heatmaps of anomalies and suspected devices. Using MQTT reports from multiple nodes, you can visualize where suspicious transmissions occur most frequently—great for regulatory reporting, club initiatives, or contest integrity.

Installation Overview

Requirements:

Python 3.x

RTL-SDR dongle

Packages:
numpy
,
scikit-learn
,
pyrtlsdr
,
paho-mqtt
,
joblib
, etc.

Quick Install:

git clone https://github.com/Slayingripper/SpectrumAlert.git
cd SpectrumAlert

A Special Reflection for Malaysian Amateur Radio Operators

Today, 31st August 2025, we celebrate 68 years of Malaysia’s independence. On this day, Malaysians from all walks of life come together to honour the struggles of our forefathers, the sacrifices of our heroes, and the unity that has brought us this far as a nation.

For us in the amateur radio community, Merdeka carries an extra layer of meaning. Amateur radio has always been about freedom of communication, exploration of knowledge, and service to society. Just as our country fought for independence, amateur radio thrives on the spirit of independence, operators building, experimenting, and connecting without borders.

Amateur Radio & National Spirit

Since the early days, Malaysian amateur radio operators (or “hams”) have contributed to:

Emergency communications during disasters, when conventional systems fail.

Friendship and goodwill, linking Malaysians with the global ham community.

Technical innovation, experimenting with antennas, propagation, satellites, and digital modes.

Nation building, through community events, education, and training the next generation of operators.

This Merdeka, we remember that our hobby is not just about radio, it is about unity, resilience, and service, values that mirror the very foundation of our independence.

Looking Ahead

As Malaysia advances into a digital and interconnected future, amateur radio remains relevant and meaningful. Whether through HF contacts across continents, VHF/UHF repeaters, APRS, satellites, or even experimentation with new digital modes, we carry forward the Merdeka spirit, adaptable, independent, and innovative.

Let us continue to:

Mentor new hams and keep the spirit alive.

Volunteer our skills for society whenever needed.

Uphold the amateur’s code of respect, courtesy, and lifelong learning.

73 & Selamat Hari Kebangsaan!

On behalf of the Malaysian amateur radio community, we wish everyone a Happy Merdeka 2025. May the spirit of independence continue to inspire us, on the airwaves and in our daily lives.

Every year, radio waves from lighthouses around the globe light up the amateur radio bands, connecting people across continents in a unique celebration — the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW). For 2025, Malaysia once again takes its place among the nations proudly activating its historic beacons, bringing together heritage, technology, and the spirit of amateur radio.

The History of ILLW

The International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend began modestly in 1993 as the “Lighthouse Weekend” initiated by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group in Scotland. The early goal was simple yet inspired:
to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships while encouraging amateur radio operators to visit these sites, operate from them, and keep their history alive.

By 1998, the event evolved into its current form under the guidance of Mike Dalrymple, VK4MIK, and has grown into one of the largest annual events in the amateur radio calendar. It’s held on the third full weekend of August each year and now attracts more than 500 lighthouses and lightships in over 40 countries.

The ILLW is not a contest. Instead, it’s a relaxed and friendly on-air gathering, focusing on making contacts, sharing the stories of lighthouses, and highlighting their importance as navigational aids and cultural landmarks. Amateur radio operators often welcome visitors on-site, introduce them to the hobby, and spread awareness of maritime history.

In addition to radio activity, ILLW helps foster lighthouse preservation efforts. Many stations work in cooperation with heritage and conservation groups, ensuring these maritime sentinels are remembered long after their practical use in navigation has faded.

Malaysia’s Role in ILLW

Malaysia has been an active and enthusiastic participant in the ILLW for years. With its rich maritime history and strategic location along important shipping routes, Malaysia’s lighthouses have guided sailors for generations. Today, they also serve as points of connection for amateur radio operators reaching out across the globe.

For ILLW 2025, Malaysia is represented by a remarkable lineup of special event stations, each operating from iconic lighthouse locations. These activations not only promote amateur radio but also showcase Malaysia’s coastal heritage to the world.

Malaysian Lighthouse Activations – ILLW 2025

Region

Callsign

Lighthouse Name & Location

ILLW Reference

Malaysia East

9M4LHD

Tanjung Datu

MY0022

Malaysia West

9M4LBJ

Bukit Jugra

MY0006

Malaysia West

9M4LHB

Altingsburg Lighthouse, Selangor

MY0005

Malaysia West

9M4LHC

Tanjung Gelang

MY0002

Malaysia West

9M4LHN

Tanjung Tuan / Rumah Api

MY0001

Malaysia West

9M4LHJ

Bukit Segenting, Johor

MY0008

Malaysia West

9M4LHT

Bukit Puteri

MY0010

Malaysia West

9M4LHU

Pulau Undan

MY0017

Why This Matters

Malaysia’s presence in ILLW is more than just a weekend of radio contacts — it’s about:

Preserving Maritime Heritage – Sharing the stories of our coastal landmarks.

Promoting Amateur Radio – Encouraging public interest and involvement in this technical, rewarding hobby.

Building Global Friendships – Linking voices from every corner of the world.

By joining this event, Malaysian operators show that the country’s lighthouses are not just historical structures but living symbols of communication and connection.

When to Listen

The 2025 International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend runs from
0001 UTC 16 August 2025 to 2400 UTC 17 August 2025.

Look for Malaysian stations on HF bands and give them a call — you’ll be part of a worldwide celebration of lighthouses, history, and radio.

Nestled in the heart of Taiping, Perak, the Taiping Telegraph Museum is a hidden gem for history lovers and curious travellers alike. Housed in a beautifully restored colonial-era building completed in 1885, this museum once served as the first facility in the Malay States to combine telegraph, telephone, postal, and banking services under one roof.

The museum was officially opened in 2018 and is proudly recognised as the first telegraph museum in Southeast Asia. It offers a glimpse into Malaysia’s early communication history and celebrates the evolution of technology that shaped the nation.

A Journey Through Time

Taiping played a pioneering role in the country’s telecommunications history. As early as 1876, it became the terminus of the Taiping–Port Weld telegraph line. Over the years, the building changed hands and functions, surviving the Japanese occupation and later serving as a local telecommunication office until the early 2000s.

After years of disrepair, it underwent extensive restoration and now stands as a beautiful heritage building with preserved colonial charm and a wealth of exhibits within.

What to Expect

Inside, visitors will find more than 50 unique artefacts that tell the story of communication through the ages. These include original telegraph transmitters, vintage typewriters, early telephone booths, and a rare 1870s submarine cable insulated with natural rubber from the Gutta Percha tree.

Exhibits are thoughtfully displayed over two levels, with information provided in both Malay and English. The layout is clean and air-conditioned, making it a pleasant experience even on hot afternoons. Comfortable seating areas are also available for those who wish to take their time absorbing the history.

A Must-Visit for Amateur Radio Enthusiasts

For amateur radio operators, this museum is more than just a historical attraction — it’s a deep dive into the origins of long-distance communication. Telegraphy, Morse code, and early signal transmission are the foundations upon which amateur radio was built.

Visiting the Taiping Telegraph Museum offers a rare opportunity to explore how Malaysia first embraced telegraphic technology, and to see up-close the tools and techniques that paved the way for modern radio communication. It’s an inspiring destination for operators who appreciate the legacy of CW (continuous wave) and the ingenuity of early messaging systems.

Visitor Experience

The museum is compact yet rich in content, making it ideal for school visits, family outings, or solo exploration. It’s praised for its cleanliness, friendly staff, and attention to detail. Children, in particular, enjoy the interactive elements and seeing how communication was done before the age of smartphones.

Admission fees are affordable, and the environment is welcoming. Many visitors also note how the museum sparks a sense of nostalgia while offering educational insights into Malaysia’s development.

Helpful Info

Opening hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily

Duration of visit: Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours

Location: Situated behind the Taiping Post Office, near the Taiping Municipal Gallery

Parking: Available nearby

Why You Should Visit

The Taiping Telegraph Museum offers more than just a history lesson. It brings the past to life and helps visitors appreciate the roots of modern communication. From Morse code to manual switchboards, this museum is a tribute to the innovation and effort that laid the groundwork for Malaysia’s current telecom systems.

As part of the wider Taiping Heritage Trail, it’s a meaningful stop that fits perfectly into a day exploring Taiping’s other attractions, such as the lake gardens, colonial architecture, and nearby museums.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a student, or a traveller looking for something different, the Taiping Telegraph Museum is a delightful destination. It’s small, well-curated, and deeply engaging — a place where the echoes of dots and dashes still whisper the stories of a connected past.

And for amateur radio operators, it’s a chance to pay tribute to the legacy of telegraphy — the original spark that started it all.

“CQ CQ Bunkers on the Air — from a site once guarding our shores, now echoing with RF!”

A new and exciting on-air activity is taking root in Malaysia — one that blends amateur radio, history, and adventure in a way we’ve never done before.

Introducing 9M Bunkers on the Air (9MBOTA) — the official Malaysian chapter of the global WWBOTA (World Wide Bunkers on the Air) movement. Designed for licensed radio amateurs who love portable operation and heritage exploration, this activity encourages hams to activate and operate near historical bunkers and fortifications — with proper respect, safety, and permission.

Official Site: https://9mbota.hamradio.my

What is WWBOTA?

World Wide Bunkers on the Air (WWBOTA) is an international amateur radio initiative focused on activating historic bunkers, pillboxes, forts, and underground military sites. Operators set up portable stations near these locations and make contacts with other hams around the world.

Like SOTA (Summits on the Air) or POTA (Parks on the Air), WWBOTA is all about activating from specific reference sites — but with a unique twist: each one tells a military or wartime story.

What is 9MBOTA?

9MBOTA is Malaysia’s official participation in WWBOTA. With a rich landscape of wartime bunkers, pillboxes, and forts from World War II, the Malayan Emergency, and the colonial era, Malaysia is a natural fit for this global movement.

Whether it’s a Japanese WWII bunker in Penang, an old British pillbox in Johor, or a hidden fort in Borneo — these sites are now being rediscovered and activated by Malaysian amateur radio operators under the 9MBOTA banner.

IMPORTANT: Always operate near the bunker, not inside. Do not enter private or restricted areas unless you have full permission. Your safety is your responsibility.

How to Get Started with 9MBOTA

Step-by-Step Guide

Visit the official website

Find a reference site
Use the map/list of bunkers in Malaysia with official WWBOTA reference codes (e.g. B/9M-0001).

Choose your activation site wisely
Only operate from public, accessible land near the bunker. Avoid entering private or dangerous locations.

Set up your portable radio station
HF or VHF/UHF — you decide. Most WWBOTA activations happen on 40m and 20m SSB, but FT8, CW, FM, and digital modes are welcome too.

Call “CQ Bunkers on the Air”
Log your QSOs, take some photos, and submit your activation details on the website.

Spot yourself
Use the WWBOTA cluster or apps like Ham2K Portable Logger or fieldspotter.radio to help other chasers find you.

Why Participate?

Explore History: Learn about Malaysia’s wartime past in a hands-on way.

Promote Heritage & Tourism: Share photos, logs, and experiences to raise awareness of these historical sites.

Earn Recognition: Points, awards, and certificates are available through WWBOTA.

Safety & Access Rules

WWBOTA and 9MBOTA do not take responsibility for your access or safety. Always follow local laws, respect property boundaries, and put safety first.

DO:

Operate near bunkers from safe, legal locations

Check maps, land ownership, and surroundings

Inform someone of your location and carry a phone/GPS

Get permission for private or protected land

DO NOT:

WWBOTA Website

9MBOTA Website

Final Words

9MBOTA offers a unique and meaningful way for Malaysian hams to explore their country, share its hidden stories, and keep the spirit of radio adventure alive. With every activation, you’re not just making QSOs — you’re bringing forgotten pieces of history back to life.

So next time you plan your portable setup, think beyond summits and parks — think bunkers. Respect them, operate near them, and make history heard once again… over the air.
