Malaysia Joins the 28th International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW) 2025
Every year, radio waves from lighthouses around the globe light up the amateur radio bands, connecting people across continents in a unique celebration — the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW). For 2025, Malaysia once again takes its place among the nations proudly activating its historic beacons, bringing together heritage, technology, and the spirit of amateur radio.
The History of ILLW
The International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend began modestly in 1993 as the “Lighthouse Weekend” initiated by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group in Scotland. The early goal was simple yet inspired:
to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships while encouraging amateur radio operators to visit these sites, operate from them, and keep their history alive.
By 1998, the event evolved into its current form under the guidance of Mike Dalrymple, VK4MIK, and has grown into one of the largest annual events in the amateur radio calendar. It’s held on the third full weekend of August each year and now attracts more than 500 lighthouses and lightships in over 40 countries.
The ILLW is not a contest. Instead, it’s a relaxed and friendly on-air gathering, focusing on making contacts, sharing the stories of lighthouses, and highlighting their importance as navigational aids and cultural landmarks. Amateur radio operators often welcome visitors on-site, introduce them to the hobby, and spread awareness of maritime history.
In addition to radio activity, ILLW helps foster lighthouse preservation efforts. Many stations work in cooperation with heritage and conservation groups, ensuring these maritime sentinels are remembered long after their practical use in navigation has faded.
Malaysia’s Role in ILLW
Malaysia has been an active and enthusiastic participant in the ILLW for years. With its rich maritime history and strategic location along important shipping routes, Malaysia’s lighthouses have guided sailors for generations. Today, they also serve as points of connection for amateur radio operators reaching out across the globe.
For ILLW 2025, Malaysia is represented by a remarkable lineup of special event stations, each operating from iconic lighthouse locations. These activations not only promote amateur radio but also showcase Malaysia’s coastal heritage to the world.

- Promoting Amateur Radio – Encouraging public interest and involvement in this technical, rewarding hobby.
- Building Global Friendships – Linking voices from every corner of the world.
By joining this event, Malaysian operators show that the country’s lighthouses are not just historical structures but living symbols of communication and connection.
