APRS Connect: The Modern, Messaging-First APRS Client for iOS and Android
TL;DR: APRS Connect by AxelStack LLC is a modern, cross-platform APRS client for Android and iOS that brings Bob Bruninga’s original vision of APRS into the smartphone era. Instead of treating APRS as a vehicle tracking map with primitive text boxes, APRS Connect puts messaging at the center of the user experience. It features threaded conversations grouped across multiple SSIDs, six verifiable delivery states (including off-the-air digipeat confirmation), an intelligent exponential backoff retry ladder, a built-in directory of 22 guided APRS bot services (including the 9M2PJU-4 all-in-one utility bot), full APRS OTA (
aprsota.org) operation support, offline vector maps powered by Protomaps, and rich packet inspection. For radio operators, APRS Connect interfaces with Bluetooth Classic and BLE KISS TNCs, LoRa APRS trackers running CA2RXU firmware, USB serial interfaces, and even features a built-in software AFSK 1200 audio modem that turns any standard HT into an APRS station using a simple audio cable. APRS Connect is completely free to use over APRS-IS, with a Pro subscription available for hardware radio connectivity, offline region downloads, digipeater coverage heatmaps, and standalone IGate/digipeater operations.
What Is APRS Connect?
APRS Connect is a messaging-first mobile APRS client for Android and iOS that combines threaded radio text messaging, off-the-air delivery tracking, hardware TNC and software audio modem connectivity, offline vector maps, and guided APRS bot services into a modern interface.

When Bob Bruninga (WB4APR) introduced the Automatic Packet Reporting System in the late 1980s and early 1990s, his primary objective was tactical communications and local situational awareness. It was never intended to be merely a vehicle tracking map. Bob envisioned APRS as a real-time, peer-to-peer data distribution utility where operators could exchange tactical messages, broadcast bulletins, report weather emergencies, and request automated assistance across VHF packet radio frequencies (144.390 MHz in North America and Malaysia, 144.800 MHz in Europe).
Over the subsequent three decades, the software ecosystem skewed heavily toward vehicle tracking. Legacy desktop tools and early mobile applications relegated APRS messaging to secondary dialog boxes, single-line terminal inputs, or unthreaded logs with zero delivery guarantees. Operators in the field frequently had no idea whether a packet was dropped by channel collisions, digipeated across the mountain ridge, or successfully acknowledged by the intended recipient.
APRS Connect, developed by AxelStack LLC, directly rectifies this imbalance. By treating APRS as an asynchronous, threaded messaging platform first and a geographic tracking tool second, APRS Connect delivers the reliability and polish expected from modern mobile communication apps while maintaining strict adherence to AX.25 and APRS protocol specifications.
Messaging Reimagined: Six Delivery States and Intelligent Retries
The core differentiator of APRS Connect is its messaging engine. Instead of a flat list of incoming raw packets, conversations are organized into dedicated threads per station callsign.

Multi-SSID Conversation Threading
In typical amateur radio operations, an operator may be active on multiple SSIDs throughout the day:
– 9M2PJU (Home base station)
– 9M2PJU-7 (Handheld transceiver)
– 9M2PJU-9 (Mobile vehicle rig)
Traditional APRS applications split these into three completely disconnected windows. APRS Connect consolidates all interactions with a station into a single unified conversation thread under the base callsign. Whenever an incoming message originates from an alternate SSID, the message bubble is clearly tagged (such as from 9M2PJU-7).
When replying, APRS Connect automatically routes your outgoing message to whichever SSID was heard last, ensuring your response reaches the radio currently in the operator’s hands. If desired, you can tap the SSID selector above the input box to target a specific hardware terminal, or disable grouping entirely under Settings > Messages.
Honest Delivery State Tracking
Amateur radio channels are half-duplex and subject to packet collisions, hidden transmitters, and multipath fading. APRS Connect removes the guesswork by tracking each transmitted message through six distinct, verifiable states:
- Queued: The message is buffered in local storage, waiting for the selected transport link (RF channel or APRS-IS socket) to become available.
- Sent: The frame has been pushed to the hardware TNC or APRS-IS server, but physical radiation off the antenna hasn’t yet been independently verified.
- Digipeated: A major feature for RF operators. APRS Connect listens for its own transmitted packet echoed back by a local digipeater. When the echoed frame arrives, the state transitions to Digipeated, providing definitive proof that your signal made it into the air and was repeated.
- Delivered: The destination station received the packet and returned an explicit AX.25 acknowledgment (
ack{ID}). - Rejected: The destination station received the message but returned an explicit refusal (
rej{ID}). - Not Delivered: All scheduled retry attempts were exhausted without receiving an acknowledgment.
Intelligent Exponential Backoff and Collision Avoidance
Standard APRS messaging uses positive acknowledgments with retries. Sending retries at aggressive, fixed intervals exacerbates channel congestion. APRS Connect implements an intelligent retry ladder:
- Configurable Intervals: Operators can select base retry intervals of 10, 30, or 60 seconds, with total attempt limits of 3, 6, or 10 transmissions.
- Progressive Spacing: Retries lengthen progressively. Under the default 30-second schedule, retries space out to approximately 30s, 60s, 90s, 120s, and 150s, capped at a five-minute ceiling.
- Randomized Jitter: Each retry window incorporates up to 5 seconds of random jitter to prevent synchronized packet collisions with other stations contending for the channel.
- Mid-Retry Cancellation: Tapping stop during an in-flight transmission gives you an honest post-mortem report: whether the message was aborted in time, repeated by a digipeater before cancellation, or already delivered.
- Retry When Heard (Pro): If a message exhausts its retry ladder because the recipient drove behind a ridge, APRS Connect Pro puts the message into a dormant monitoring queue. The app watches incoming traffic for that specific callsign and SSID over the next two weeks. As soon as the target station beacons, APRS Connect automatically re-fires the message using the original message ID.
Radio Connectivity: From Bluetooth KISS to Built-In Software Audio Modem
While APRS Connect is completely functional over the global APRS-IS internet network, its hardware radio integration is where it shines for field operators, SOTA/POTA activators, and emergency communicators.

1. Bluetooth Classic KISS TNCs (Android)
For operators with radios featuring built-in Bluetooth KISS TNCs, such as the Kenwood TH-D74 and TH-D75, or external hardware TNCs like the Mobilinkd TNC3, APRS Connect pairs smoothly via Android’s native Bluetooth subsystem.
– Automatic TNC Detection: Devices with “TNC”, “KISS”, or “TH-D” in their Bluetooth broadcast are automatically flagged and prioritized.
– Hardware Telemetry: When connected to a Mobilinkd TNC, APRS Connect reads and displays the TNC’s internal battery percentage and operating voltage directly on the status bar.
2. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) TNCs (iOS and Android)
Unlike Bluetooth Classic, which iOS heavily restricts for serial profiles, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) allows smooth cross-platform communication on both iPhone and Android. APRS Connect supports:
– Mobilinkd TNC4 (operating in BLE mode)
– B.B. Link
– Tidradio TD-H9 (with Bluetooth APRS capability)
– Standard KISS-over-BLE GATT services
3. LoRa APRS Trackers
LoRa APRS on 433 MHz and 868/915 MHz has experienced explosive growth among amateur radio operators. APRS Connect interfaces directly with LoRa APRS trackers running CA2RXU open source firmware over BLE. Operators can exchange messages and view LoRa stations without requiring a separate, specialized LoRa client.
4. USB Serial TNCs
Connecting a smartphone to a radio via USB On-The-Go (OTG) provides rock-solid, interference-free communications:
– Direct USB-C connection to a Mobilinkd TNC4.
– USB connection to Kenwood TH-D74/TH-D75 in USB KISS mode.
– Hardware TNCs including TNC-X, TNC-Pi, and micro-controller boards running KISS firmware.
– Dedicated hardware baud rate configuration (9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, 115200) and persistent DTR signal line control.
5. Built-In Software AFSK 1200 Audio Modem (No Hardware TNC Required!)
One of the most impressive technical achievements in APRS Connect is its built-in software AFSK 1200 modem. By utilizing the smartphone’s onboard digital signal processor (DSP), the app encodes and decodes Bell 202 audio tones (1200 Hz mark / 2200 Hz space) directly through the audio hardware.
- Any Analog Radio Supported: Any standard handheld or mobile radio with an audio jack (Baofeng UV-5R, Yaesu FT-65, Icom IC-V80) can be cabled to the phone via a TRRS headset cable or a USB sound card interface like the Digirig Mobile.
- Dual PTT Options: Transmit keying can be triggered via VOX (with customizable audio pre-tones to open the radio squelch) or via hardware serial RTS/DTR lines on a Digirig USB adapter.
- Stuck-Transmitter Watchdog: Protects the radio from staying keyed if audio routing hangs or a cable is disconnected.
- Audio Routing Watchdog: The app monitors the operating system’s audio subsystem. If Android or iOS inadvertently routes packet audio to the built-in speaker or microphone instead of the plugged-in audio interface, a warning banner alerts the operator immediately.
6. KISS over TCP
For shacks running Direwolf software soundcard modems on a Raspberry Pi or network-attached TNCs, APRS Connect connects over local Wi-Fi or VPN via TCP port 8001. Multiple radio ports on a single Direwolf server can be mapped to independent virtual channels within the app.
The 22-Service Directory: Guided Screens for the APRS Bot Ecosystem
The global APRS network hosts dozens of automated service bots and gateways. Interacting with them has traditionally required memorizing cryptic commands, specific target callsigns, and strict spacing rules.
APRS Connect transforms this landscape by including a built-in directory of 22 APRS services, presenting each as a clean, guided interactive screen:

Highlighting the 9M2PJU-4 All-in-One Utility Bot
Amateur radio operator 9M2PJU created the 9M2PJU-4 APRS server bot to provide an all-in-one suite of tactical utilities for operators in Southeast Asia and worldwide over APRS. APRS Connect natively incorporates the 9M2PJU-4 bot directly into its utility directory alongside WHO-IS and REPEAT. Instead of hand-formatting APRS queries in a raw message prompt, operators can invoke 9M2PJU-4 tools with guided inputs, receiving instant formatted responses directly in their messaging timeline.
Additional Notable Services in the Directory:
- APRS OTA (
OTA): Complete integration for hosting and chasing on-the-air operations with countdown timers, caller queues, and automatic QSL confirmations. - ANSRVR & #APRSThursday: Turns group messaging into a structured “Net Room.” When joining
#APRSThursday, the app aggregates all net traffic into a dedicated room, displays your check-in status and remaining time, and provides an automated reminder scheduled for UTC Thursday. - ARRL NTS Radiograms: Files standard emergency and traffic radiograms via a guided, multi-step wizard that verifies word counts, routing tags, and station formatting before transmission.
- Winlink (WLNK-1): Read, draft, and reply to Winlink hybrid emails from your handheld radio over RF or APRS-IS.
- APSPOT & APRS2SOTA: Instant self-spotting for Parks on the Air (POTA), Summits on the Air (SOTA), and World Wide Flora and Fauna (WWFF) when operating outside cellular internet coverage.
- Data-Driven Architecture: The entire service directory is defined in pure JSON. Operators can export the directory, add local repeater club bots or custom regional services, and import the modified schema back into the app.
Vector Mapping, Protomaps, and Offline PMTiles
A modern mobile client requires responsive, battery-efficient mapping. Traditional web-based APRS maps download static raster image tiles that blur when zoomed, consume massive mobile data, and fail completely when cellular coverage drops in mountainous terrain.
APRS Connect adopts modern vector tile architecture:

- Protomaps & PMTiles Integration: The app renders vector data locally on the smartphone’s GPU. Roads, terrain contours, and political boundaries remain razor-sharp at any zoom level.
- Dynamic Caching: Every tile viewed during normal operation is cached locally, up to a user-selectable limit of 10 GB.
- Offline Region Downloads (Pro): Operators heading into wilderness areas can pre-download entire geographic regions across North America and Europe, providing full navigation and topographical maps with zero internet connection.
- Animated Digipeater Routing: When inspecting a station on the map, APRS Connect animates the exact path its packets traversed, drawing dynamic vector lines hop-by-hop from the transmitter through each digipeater to your receiving station.
- Digipeater Coverage Heatmaps (Pro): Generates an empirical RF coverage heatmap. It records every provable location from which your signal successfully tripped a local digipeater, creating an invaluable real-world coverage profile of your station’s antennas.
- International Space Station (ISS) Tracking (Pro): Tracks the published orbital mechanics of the ISS (
NA1SS/RS0ISS). The app displays the space station’s real-time footprint, alerts you before upcoming passes, and configures a one-tap ARISS beacon profile with appropriate path settings.

- Smart Fill-In Digipeater: When acting as a fill-in digipeater, APRS Connect listens for five seconds before keying the transmitter. If another wide-area digipeater repeats the packet first, APRS Connect drops its copy. This fills dead spots in local valleys without cluttering the regional RF frequency.
- Intelligent Bi-Directional IGate:
- RF to Internet: Immediately forwards valid RF packets heard over the air into the global APRS-IS backbone.
- Internet to RF: Intelligently restricts internet-to-radio traffic. APRS Connect only transmits messages over the air if the destination station has been heard locally on RF, preventing global internet packet storms from choking local frequencies.

WXBOTfor weather orWHO-ISfor license lookup). - Tap send. Watch the message bubble transition through Queued, Sent, and Delivered as the acknowledgment packet returns from the network.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is APRS Connect and what platforms does it support?
APRS Connect is a modern, messaging-first mobile APRS client developed by AxelStack LLC. It is available on both Android (via Google Play) and iOS (via Apple App Store), supporting APRS-IS internet traffic, hardware TNCs, and audio cables.
Do I need an amateur radio license to use APRS Connect?
Yes. Transmitting on amateur radio frequencies over RF or connecting to the authenticated global APRS-IS backbone requires a valid amateur radio operator license and callsign issued by your telecommunications authority (such as MCMC in Malaysia or the FCC in the US).
How does APRS Connect confirm if a message was digipeated?
When transmitting over RF, APRS Connect monitors incoming packets for its own transmitted message payload returned by a repeater station. Upon hearing its echoed packet with a digipeater callsign in the path, the app marks the message as confirmed “Digipeated”.
Can I use APRS Connect with an analog radio without a hardware TNC?
Yes. APRS Connect includes a built-in software AFSK 1200 audio modem. By connecting your phone’s audio jack or a USB soundcard interface (such as a Digirig) to your radio, the phone decodes and generates Bell 202 packet audio tones directly.
What features are included in the free version versus APRS Connect Pro?
The free version provides full APRS-IS messaging, all 22 bot service screens, APRS OTA, vector mapping, and packet logging. APRS Connect Pro ($3.99/month or $29.99/year) unlocks physical radio TNC links, audio modems, offline maps, and standalone IGate/digipeater operations.
